Sizes reinforced concrete sections of any shape, with asymmetric reinforcement and prestressing steel: what commercial software cannot solve.

The program

CID (Concrete Interaction Diagram) is a program capable of sizing a reinforced concrete section of any shape, with asymmetric reinforcement and prestressing steel. It was developed and implemented entirely in the Python language, and has been in use since 2020.

What it calculates

CID builds the interaction diagram of the section: the curve that defines all the combinations of axial force and bending moment that the section can resist before failing. In addition to the ultimate-strength diagram, it calculates the cracking, no-tension and service diagrams, which makes it possible to verify the section in all its limit states.

Where it has been used

Among other projects, CID was used in the verification and design of SOBOPRET's prestressed joists (SOBOCE), where the ultimate-strength, cracking, no-tension and service interaction diagrams were calculated for different types of slab.

About interaction diagrams

The concrete-section calculation that CID performs

It is the curve that defines all the combinations of axial force and bending moment that a reinforced concrete section can resist just before failing. If the demand falls inside the curve, the section is safe; if it falls outside, it fails. It is the basic tool for designing columns and members under combined bending and compression.

It is the code criterion that defines the failure strain planes of a section. Depending on where the material is exhausted first, the strain pivots about one of three points: the rupture of the tensioned steel, the crushing of the concrete in bending, or near-uniform compression. By sweeping through the three pivots, the complete interaction diagram is built.

CID sizes reinforced concrete sections of any shape, with asymmetric reinforcement and even prestressing steel, something most commercial tools cannot solve.

In addition to the ultimate-strength interaction diagram, CID calculates the cracking, no-tension and service ones, which makes it possible to verify the section in all its limit states, not only at ultimate.
